Job Description

Payroll & Benefits Specialist - Excel

Position requires working onsite in Chicago, IL

Seeking a payroll professional who possesses hands-on payroll experience supporting 500+ employees, as well as benefits administration, benefits reconciliation, strong Excel skills, pivot tables, xlookups, trend analysis, and custom reporting, etc.

Focus will be on reviewing and evaluating an organization’s payroll data—such as wages, taxes, benefits, and hours worked—to ensure accuracy, compliance with laws, and cost optimization.

You will be an expert analyzing trends to control labor costs, improve efficiency, and make informed, data-driven decisions.

Key aspects of payroll analysis include:

Accuracy and Compliance: Ensuring that employee compensation, tax deductions, and legal requirements are met to avoid fines, penalties, and disputes.

Cost Management: Analyzing overtime, turnover rates, and compensation distribution to optimize budgetary allocations and reduce overspending.

Performance Insight: Using data to understand labor cost trends, monitor employee productivity, and inform workforce strategy.

Techniques often involve descriptive analytics to understand historical patterns and predictive analytics to forecast future expenses.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of payroll experience, preferably in a multi-state environment.
  • Proficiency in UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group) or another HRIS/payroll system.
  • Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables and formulas.
  • Experience with benefit vendor feeds and invoice reconciliations.
  • BI reporting or data analytics experience is a plus.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong sense of ownership and follow-through with clear communication.
  • Understanding of payroll compliance, benefit deductions, and reporting best practices.
